Stay Connected
After the PSTN Shutdown
The UK’s copper-based phone network is being switched off by January 2027. Find out how this change affects your services and what you need to do to stay connected.
Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) FAQ
The UK’s Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is being shut down, with a final deadline of January 31, 2027.
This transition involves moving from the old copper-wire-based system to a fully digital network using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) over a fibre-based service.
The switch-off affects traditional landlines, and many other services that rely on copper lines, like certain alarms, EPOS machines, and ADSL broadband.
You can find further information on the reasons for this change on following government website.
https://www.gov.uk/guidance/uk-transition-from-analogue-to-digital-landlines
We have been notified by a number of our suppliers of services that are subject to the copper dependent connectivity and landline services being removed from exchanges within the next 6 months.
If you have received an email, this will mean that we will need to regrade your services to a fibre product before the exchange closure to avoid loss of service.
All copper landline services will be ceased which will mean you will need to move to a digital phone service (VoIP) which will utilise the internet connectivity if you wish to continue with your phone service as well as your connectivity. We can provide this service and port your existing number so you do not lose it during the regrade.
Currently we have been notified of a more than 10 exchanges which directly affects our customers with copper related services removal scheduled up to the 31 st March 2026. We anticipate more exchanges will be added within 2026 and the PSTN shutdown will conclude by January 31, 2027.
No, unfortunately, this is part of a Government led initiative and unless we regrade your service it will be automatically ceased by the supplier after the deadline.
We have a team ready to help discuss the move with you including keeping any landline numbers or additional services that you may be using. Please contact them on 01403214077 between 09:00 – 17:30 (Monday – Thursday) 09:00 – 17:00 (Friday) or 09:00 – 13:00 (Saturday)
